The Vanishing

A couple take a cycling vacation in France, while traveling they run out of gas and Rex leaves Saskia behind in a dark tunnel. When he returns he finds her upset and vows to never abandon her again. While getting drinks at a gas station, Rex waits in the car, but Saskia never returns. For three years, Rex searches, forsaking all to find her. His new girlfriend leaves him over the obsession, then Raymond a college professor appears promising to reveal everything to Rex if he will do as Raymond asks.

Girl, I once watched this film in the middle of the night and still remember the experience. It is a terrifying movie, with no guns, knives, mythological creatures, only a madman and another man consumed with his love. Rex loves Saskia and his loyalty to her consumes him. He cannot give up his search or forget her. His ultimate sacrifice is being willing to experience what she did, in a wild hope that somehow this will bring her to him.

Rex's passion for Saskia captures me. He remembers every detail about Saskia. He can still retrace her steps on that last day. He can't give her up, she is part of him. I feel the same about you. Each detail is important, the look in your eyes is something I can never forget. And I will never abandon you, I love you that much.

The Others

Grace Stewart is raising her two children in her country manor, while her husband is off at war. Adding to her stress is a disease each of her children have that does not allow them to be exposed to sunlight. Three new servants come to the house, as Grace's daughter, Anne begins to have visions of other people in the house. Each person begins to realize they live in the house alone. The servants hold a great secret, which Grace attempts to uncover before something unthinkable happens to her children or perhaps something unthinkable already has.

Girl, I've watched this film a few times since you suggested it. Of course it loses the twist after the first viewing, but there is something gripping about the characters. The mother is an odd mixture of security, love, and instability. I like Anne the best, unbelieved by her mother, shunned by her brother, and secretly believed by the servants for seeing ghosts. The story unwinds its secrets slowly and in a way that compels me to watch, even though I know the answers. Mothers are protection. The horror comes from a mother you can't trust.

You are so good with kids...you are everything this mother is not.

Monsieur Hire

Monsieur Hire is an unassuming tailor by day, disliked by his neighbors for his terse, quiet personality. By night, he is the quiet voyeur, watching every movement of his neighbor Alice. When a young woman is murdered, suspicion is cast on Hire. As Alice discovers his watching, a bizarre romance begins. However, someone is a killer and the police are determined to catch the perpetrator. Monsieur Hire is the key.

Babe, I like how this movie slowly turns, casting doubt on each character, until even the truth leaves one unsure of the story's outcome. Hire's obsession drives the film. I love many of the little scenes in the film: how Alice's says her boyfriend kisses like her a man, how Hire cannot stop looking at Alice, how Hire touches her and she closes her eyes. He knows everything about her. She has him and knows it which is both the romance and the danger in the story.

I watch you and take in everything I can about you. The more I see, the more I love you.

The Comfort of Strangers

A couple vacations in Venice, seeking to grow their relationship. Colin and Mary meet Robert, a debonair bar owner, who lives in a beautiful home amidst Venice and has a voyeuristic interest in the couple. Robert is like a magnet drawing Colin and Mary closer to him, along with Robert's wife, Caroline. The older couple unsettles and interests the younger at the same time, until Colin and Mary discover there is a price in the comfort of strangers.

Girl, this is one of the first movies you sent me to find. I still dream of Venice and getting lost in the mazes of streets with you. The two couples are hypnotic. I found myself pulled towards them just as they were to each other. The movie feels of sexy dangerous from the beginning. I never saw the end coming, it shocked me to the core. The characters held me in a trance and in an odd way I felt as if I was one the characters caught by surprise at the end.

I hope I dream of you and Venice tonight.

The Guardian

Hunter has grown up with one belief: he has a guardian angel. He doesn't remember much, but knows someone is watching over him. When his foster family begins to fall apart and the situation turns ugly, he begins to pray to his angel. His prayers are answered. Hunter begins to see a black clad figure on a motorcycle with wings painted on his bike. This guardian is working on his behalf. However, Hunter's faith is about to be tested as the world seeks to explain away his beliefs and he must trust in what he cannot see to bring him through.

Girl, I read this book straight through as it kept me guessing. I found Hunter a living character through the story and I wanted what he hoped for to be true. I loved how he clung to his family despite its imperfections. He had such hopes and believed so much in everyone. The ending was perfect. I loved the book at first, the touch of supernatural grabbed me. Then it continue to grab me as it challenged what I had believed to be true in the story. However, pointing fingers and lightning can do amazing things for one's perspective.

Avatar

On the planet of Pandora are resources the people of Earth need and want. They have only one obstacle found in the indigenous people , the Na'vi. Earth scientists and the Earth military seek to find a resolution with the Na'vi to gain everything they want, culminating their attempt in the cloned body of a Na'vi, inhabited by the consciousness of a young, paralyzed marine, Jake. However, Jake quickly feels the pull between the military might and science as each has different goals, and to complicated his feelings further, he becomes increasingly close to Neytiri, a female Na'vi. Jake draws closer to Neytiri and her people, as the military begins to realize that science will not win their cause. As the conflict nears, all will depend on Jake's resolve and the love between him and Neytiri to decide not only the fate of a planet, but the path of his life.

Girl, until you told me to go, I thought of this movie as one that would be all spectacle, with no true characters. I found three things intrigued me about the movie...one was Jake's dilemma of being forced to choose to whom he was to be committed. Secondly, I found the romance between him and Neytiri captivating. They were so different and yet they found what was important in one another. Last, I loved how they saw each other. They weren't human or Na'vi, they were Jake and Neytiri, and they knew each others souls.

This isn't a movie about a battle or a military conquest. Avatar is about essence, who one truly is. I love how you look, you capture me with how your smile and even how you stand. I think about your hair, your eyes, the slightest curve of your body. But what makes me want you most of all is that....I see you.

And Only to Deceive

It is possible to fall in love with the dead. Emily has married into an loveless relationship to escape her mother and have the freedom of joining society. She chooses Philip Ashton, for here is a man who is often gone and seems to give her the freedom she craves. Her only guilt is not feeling grief for him when he dies in Africa. This is until she reads his journal, where she finds a man she adores and whose entire heart was hers from the beginning. As Emily seeks to unravel the person she now loves but can never have, she wanders through a maze of deception as every person in her life appears to be motivated to some other type of gain. Even Philip is not left untouched and Emily must discover the truth of each person in order to finally mourn and love as her heart desires.

Girl, you recognize a great book so quick, which is why when you urge me to find a novel as you did this one, I became frustrated by not being able to obtain it quickly, and why I bought it after reading only a few chapters. The book kept me wanting to push forward, to unravel the puzzle around Emily, and never disappointed me in its twists. But what I adored most, was her relationship with Philip and how the character of a dead man so possessed this story. Her love grew and she wanted to know more and more of him.

I read every word you type more carefully than you imagine. I understand Emily, for I pour over you as she did his words and possessions, wanting to know you to your essence.
